Whitney Houston: a biopic written by Anthony Mccarten the writer of Bohemian Rhapsody
Biopics are on the rise today, especially when it comes to musical
biopics. After Rocketman, Bohemian Rhapsody and soon Michael Jackson, another
legend of music will be addressed in feature film. Indeed, we have just learned
from Deadline that the biopic of Whitney Houston, the most award-winning and
multi-award-winning singer in the history of music, is officially under
construction.
Behind cult titles like I Will Always Love You or I Have Nothing for
Bodyguard’s BO (with Kevin Costner), with more than 200 million titles sold, 6
Grammys won and lots of other awards, Whitney was a huge global icon, before
his untimely death eight years ago.
Entitled I Wanna Dance with Somebody, the film will be written by
Anthony Mccarten, a biopics specialist. Behind the scripts of A Wonderful
History of Time, The Dark Hours, The Two Popes and of course Bohemian Rhapsody,
Mccarten has proven to be comfortable with the genre (he will also write a film
about the Bee Gees). Each of her films has earned their actors Oscar
nominations, so needless to say, the singer’s interpreter will be expected at
the turn.
Director Stella Meghie (The Photograph) would be the director’s nominee, and Whitney Houston’s producer would also be the director of the film with the Houtson Foundation. Eager to reveal the happy life but also the dark demons of the singer, Clive Davis says that not everything has been told of Whitney’s tumultuous life..
Planned as an emotional film, it is hard to imagine that the rise to fame, the difficult childhood in New Jersey, the drug problems and to find love, until its tragic disappearance, will be elements to exploit for a great biopic. In the meantime we hear the famous hits of one of the greatest soul voices of the last century.
I Wanna Dance with Somebody has no release date at the moment.
